The little-known little sister to ‘Den Lille Havfrue’ (The Little Mermaid) is ‘Den Genmodificerede Havfrue’ (The Genetically Modified Mermaid), sculpted by Bjørn Nørgaard in 2006.
It is located only a few 100 meters from her big sister, in a square by the Copenhagen Harbour ‘Dahlerups Pakhus’. It is part of a larger group of sculptures called ‘The Genetically Modified Paradise’. Other members include Madonna, Adam, Christ, Maria Magdalena, Eve, the Tripartite Capital and the Pregnant Man.
Taking a humorous and post-modernist view of some of the issues with the modern world, Bjørn Nørgaard was quoted saying:
“Art does not embody definitive conclusions, but rather accommodates open possibilities for discussing art’s function in the context of modern society.“
Skip the monotony of the Little Mermaid and see the more interesting Genetically Modified sister instead!
